Bill Schor, AKA “Schorman” completed the Grid on December 13, 2012 with an out and back hike via the Jewell Trail to Mt. Jefferson. He was accompanied by his lovely wife, Diane, Steve Barbour (Little Brown Mushroom), Per Frost and Per’s trusty companion, Cinnilla. On the return trip, midway down the Jewell Trail, they met up with Ed Hawkins and Gary Tompkins. Ed then presented Bill with his Grid patch. The path to the Grid Finish has been a challenging one for Bill. February 13, 2010 at 11:45 while descending Sabbaday Brook Trail, Bill’s life changed forever. He vividly recalls, being caught up in the moment and foolishly glissading on boiler plate ice, out of control down the trail.

“ I was wearing my GPS and later realized I’d dropped 600 feet in seconds. Snowshoes on...lying on my back, I violently came to rest against a tree with my left leg. It sounded as if a shotgun had gone off and I immediately went into shock. My ankle exploded in 9 pieces and I could feel the bone fragments beneath the skin. I had also torn two tendons from my rotator cuff in the accident. I’ll always be indebted to my 29 heroes who rescued me that day. Two of my hiking friends and five more hikers stayed with me for 9 hours until rescue arrived. The 4 hour trip to the trail head was hell. My heart goes out to the folks (including my son, Steve) for all their exhausting efforts getting me to safety. I spent 3 weeks in Concord Hospital and had three surgeries. My surgeon informed me that I’d never be able to hike again in the Whites... It took me a year to get back but the old guy with the limp ‘got er done’! The real hero here is my wife, Diane, AKA “Lady Di”. I’ve told my story to many hikers in hopes it would spare them from a similar fate.”
